The Courier icon in the bottom-right corner of Obsidian tells you at a glance whether this device is syncing. Hover it to read the state as text.
| State | When you see it |
|---|---|
| Not connected — grey cloud | This vault has no remote vault, or you signed out. Open Settings → Courier and connect. |
| Not syncing — red circle | A vault is connected, but this device is not syncing right now — usually the server is unreachable, or the plugin is still starting. |
| Syncing — blue arrow | Connected, and changes travel both ways as they happen. A first sync shows this state too. |
| External sync service is syncing — yellow padlock | The command-line tool is syncing this vault right now. One writer at a time, so the plugin waits for it and takes over when it stops. |
| Sync paused — yellow pause | You paused sync. Changes stay on this device until you resume. |
The first sync
Section titled “The first sync”Hovering also shows how far the first sync has got — for example first sync — 240 of 900 files. That line disappears when the pass finishes; later starts show the state alone.
The menu
Section titled “The menu”Click the icon:
- The remote vault’s name — what this device is connected to.
- Key validity — how many days the user key has left, or Never expires. When it runs out, syncing stops; ask the administrator for a new expiry before then.
- Storage — how much of the account’s space is in use.
- Pause sync / Resume sync.
- Settings — opens the Courier settings page.
On a phone
Section titled “On a phone”A phone has no status bar. Open Settings → Courier instead: the Remote vault line reads Connected, Connecting, Connection error, Disconnected or Sync paused, and the Account row shows the key’s validity and the storage in use.
